Factions are much like the Districts in The Hunger Games but factions live close to one another; every faction completes a different task and provides different things for the government of this new world ‘Chicago’. At birth, an individual is born into the faction of his/her parents. When they reach a certain age, they must take a test to show which faction they belong to; sometimes the test doesn’t work and these individuals are known as Divergent. Divergents do not fit into a set faction, they belong to all of them. These people are direct threats to the government and are often killed. The government, controlled by the faction Abnegation, is being overthrown by Erudite in a coup. They use speech to ruin the leaders of Abnegation and get people on their side of the fight. In this sense, the governmental society of ‘Chicago’ gives the people some of the same rights we have such as freedom of speech and, in a way, freedom to do as they choose with their lives. However, by the end of the book, it becomes clear that this ‘control’ is all an illusion. Using a mind controlled Dauntless, the fearless warrior faction, Erudite take over Abnegation and begin killing innocent people in order to ensure their takeover is a success. Divergent also helped me to understand different forms of government and the things that may be being covered up in my own government. Conspiracies are a part of everyday life, what should make a federal government any different? These three bodies of government are each in their own with flaws and issues; however, they are all realistic governing bodies.
