The Theme Of Freedom In Fahrenheit 451

Under the Bill of Rights in the United States constitution, Americans are granted the freedoms of religion, assembly, and in relevance to Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the rights to free speech and the sharing of information via the press. Bradbury’s science fiction novel takes place in a futuristic dystopian America where all forms of literature are deemed illegal by the government. To uphold the book ban are firemen, whose job it is to start fires rather than putting them out in the traditional sense. Guy Montag, the novels central character, is one of these firemen. Early in the novel, Montag meets a young, free-spirited girl named Clarisse, who gets Montag to begin questioning the very system he is a part of. Montag’s character has a change of heart, as he went from a man who burned books for a living to wanted to preserve and protect them after learning what books actually have to offer: knowledge, opinions, creativity, and new ideas. The banning of books is most certainly unconstitutional as it suppresses the people’s rights to free speech and free press. This implementation of federalism is what helps keep the United States from succumbing to a state like in Bradbury’s novel. Fahrenheit 451 deals with faction through the use of the firemen and the control the government has on the media, keeping the people in a constant state of stupefied ignorance and even fear to a degree. This keeps the threat of faction from growing because the people do not see the underlying problem of an overly powerful, all controlling government waging constant
