Human Service Professionals: A Case Study

Introduction As human services professionals we are required to have the proper skills to assist our clients. Helping clients will include more than just listening to their individual needs, it will also require that we are able to communicate to the client the proper steps for them to receive the assistance they need. During this communication process we have to also take into consideration the client’s feelings, culture, beliefs, and the type of assistance they are seeking (Woodside & McClam, 2015).

The first strategy that can be used when working with a reluctant client is to explain the process to the client, by discussing confidentiality, time limits, and expectations it will help the client to open up (Woodside & McClam, 2015). When it comes to resistant clients, which can happen anytime during the helping process one of the strategies is to recognize and accept the antagonism which may defuse the situation (Woodside & McClam, 2015). Another strategy is to ask the client for their perception of the problem which will communicate support for the client’s feelings (Woodside & McClam, 2015). I do not currently have any experience when working with reluctant clients, this is something that I will have to have further education on to build up my skills to deal with these clients. I can gain skills to work with reluctant clients by taking classes or by networking with other colleagues that have experience in the field. I will discuss next the experience I have with working with silent clients.
Skills and Experience with Silent Clients Silent clients I have not worked with at all and would need to definitely gain the skills needed to be able to interact like I should with them. To gain these skills I would need to take classes either online or through my office to allow me to learn the best way to work with silent clients. I can also observe other professionals that have the skills to allow me to see a hands on approach and get some feedback on how another professional handles silent clients. Next I will discuss the skills and experience I have with working with demanding clients.
