Totally agree to certain things that should or not be shared with a client, and one’s personal life and income is infeasible to helping the client in their circumstances. Basically, it is the responsibility of the professional to set boundaries between the client and themselves, and trying to avoid unnecessary boundaries crossing. Many issues could arise from being overly personal with the client, and the professional would be in an unwanted type of relationship with the client. Certain things that should be taken in consideration when dealing with clients is legal, ethical, and what is moral in the best interest of the client. The professional not only should protect the client ‘s best interest, they must protect their best interest as well. To answer your question self-disclosure is important depending on what and who you are sharing information with. Professionally self-disclosure should be limited when dealing with a client. Depending on what you are sharing with the client and what type of positive effect it will have on the session. If self-disclosure is improperly used, it could cause embarrassment, and unwanted type of relationship with the client, for instance misleading information. Professionally could be in a risky situation if they disclose too much of their personal information (Self-Disclosure, 2016). A person must make a number of considerations when deciding whether to disclose. Also, it can increase your competence with the client if self-disclosure is done properly, this could have helpful outcomes.
