It begins when him and Jim, the black slave, are on their adventure on the island. Huck is basically helping a runaway slave, which is not a normal thing for him to be doing. He is starting to develop somewhat of a liking for Jim, and shows that he kind of cares. There’s a part in the passage where Huck is undercover as a girl in some random town. He come across this woman and begins to talk to her, dressed as a woman. Soon, the woman recognizes that Huck is really a guy and she claims him to be a “runaway apprentice”. She also tells Huck that many of the town people suspected that Jim was the murder because he left the same day of the murder. So, Huck goes back to the island where Jim is and says, “Git up and hump yourself, Jim! There ain’t a minute to lose. They’re after us!” (pg. 47) Right here you can see that Huck is not only protecting himself, but he is also protecting Jim from anyone finding him. This is a major turning point because you start to see Huck thinking about others and not only himself. Later on in the story, Huck and Jim come across a couple of robbers and in a wreckage. Two of the robbers were going to kill the third but one of the robbers came up with the idea to leave him in the wreck. So, the robbers leave and Huck immediately decides to help the third robber and cut the robbers boat loose so that they can’t go anywhere. Eventually, Huck comes up with a plan to get help to the wreckage. He goes ashore and finds another guy that has a boat and comes up with an elaborate story about how his family was on the boat.
