96% of families have at least one television in their house (Bigner & Gerhardt, 2014). It is very important for parents to interact with their children face to face. The use of screen time eliminates this possibility because the television and other screens are a distraction to anyone who is watching. Technology has changed significantly in the last fifteen years and has developed more software that is “kid friendly” (Albaiz, Ernest, Essa,Newton, & Sharkins, 2015). Parents need to reduce the amount of time that their children look at screens. It can be very hard to do this because a majority of the population is already addicted to screens. Since screens are such a necessity in our lives, it is almost impossible to escape them. Today, anywhere you go in public, you are guaranteed to see a screen. People rely on media to get them through the day. Whether it is watching the news, checking the weather, or talking to a friend, everyone comes across some sort of media at least once a day. People are constantly looking down at their phones and tablets and not focusing on where they are and who is around them. There are a plethora of different social media applications such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Facetime, just to name a few (Albaiz, Ernest, Essa,Newton, & Sharkins, 2015).
