As humans, we use psychology, which is the scientific study of human behaviors and mental processes (Rathus, 2010, pg. 5), throughout our entire life. It is one of the most fascinating things that we partake in almost every day without even realizing it (Loewen, n.d.). Psychology affects our health, how we think, what motivates us, and more (Loewen, n.d.). There are thousands of theories and adopted concepts found off the inquiry of psychology that is constantly present in our actions. These approaches range from a number of various subject matter. From the concept of James Marcia’s stages of identity status, the theories of how personalities develop from person to person, and the effects of stress, it’s easy to see how psychology can be applied to life.
Identity status, in definition, are reaction patterns and processes (Rathus, 2010, pg. 316) experienced by adolescents in no particular order or time. According to Marcia, there are four categories of identity status known as identity moratorium, identity foreclosure, identity diffusion, and identity achievement. Most adolescents, when facing the identity status stage, are working through identity moratorium. Identity moratorium is known in psychology as the “time out” stage (Rathus, 2010, pg. 316). Teens experiencing the effects of this stage are constantly searching for their character, exploring various alternatives, and delaying any source of commitments (Rathus, 2010, pg. 313).
