This video effectively conveys its message. It is clear what the argument is and an assortment of evidence and techniques that successfully supports the points made and expands on them. There is no shadow thesis to read between. The message is given in a satirical video but is still clear and simple if you understand satire and if not, it’s clear what Pendleton is trying to express - give people homes and you end homelessness. Lloyd Pendleton delivers this message factually with information to back up his claims (evidence throughout the video not just him talking) and is a seemingly trustworthy man as he is the director of the homeless task force.…
I had no idea what homelessness and panhandling was until I read these articles. The article on “Reality Check on Panhandling” correlate to the book, through Nathaniel is character as a homeless panhandler. Nathaniel did not have a place to live and lived outside on the street on Skid Row. The homeless stand outside in the rain, cold, and hot sun. Most of these homeless people are sick and with mental illness.…
Homeless On Campus Flipping through the pages of my literature book, I noticed an article that read, “Homeless on Campus” by Eleanor J Bader, a freelance writer and an instructor in the English department at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York. After reading the title, I thought to myself, how could this be? A student just like me being homeless and not receiving federal financial help. How is this? Then I continued to read.…
In the article, “Homeless, Mike Dick Was 51, Looked 66,” author Kevin Fagan stated that “The nation needs to commit, emotionally and economically, to saving these older folks” (321.) The older folks referred to in the article are homeless people that live across the United States. Fagan maintained that the nation can do better in terms giving back to the needy, especially considering the wealthy of the nation. However, what Fagan failed to mention in the article is what the homeless are not doing for themselves. Long time homelessness is a predicament that can only be blamed on the homeless because people that wind up homeless for whatever reasons are capable of changing their situation.…
Homelessness in America is a big problem among many subpopulations like individuals, families and veterans. The United States will continue to be a developed country if the numbers of people holding cardboard on the street do not decrease. 1 out of 10 people in U.S suffer from hunger and are forced to sleep in parks, under bridges, in shelters or cars (Hunger @ Homelessness 1).Every year; the homeless population grows in the United States. Throughout his memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Nick Flynn discusses the varying causes of homelessness in America. He discuses every topic from mental illness to poverty, drug abuse to alcoholism, and how each had there own effect on the homeless. While there are a multitude of possible reasons as to why someone is living on the street, Flynn focuses on the effects it has on an individual and on the reactions of society. Flynn calls attention to the rampant crisis of homelessness in America through the use of personal reflection, metaphor, and symbolism. The memoir is riddled with social criticism, and challenges the reader to understand homelessness in its full capacity.…
By discussing the policies implemented in the communities, the author dismisses the notion that the homeless are irresponsible and not worthy of being assisted such as when housing director Brent Schultz states the prohibition of “drugs, alcohol, children, and visitors” and community service required to live in tent cities such as Dignity Village (Bransford, 2011). Therefore, Branford utilizes emotional appeal when criticizing against government officials who interfere with Americans sense of personal security and property; for an example, when the “state of California” had caused “$2.3 million in damage” by tearing down makeshift homes (Bransford, 2011). Moreover, Bransford proves that this issue is significant suggesting that California should find “inspiration” from these communities as low wages, ethnic exclusion, and rising house prices are causing many individuals reliant on government assistance (Bransford, 2011). However, Branford does not address any counter arguments within his writing stating the other side of homeless individuals who are responsible for their own severe economic status. Notwithstanding, the authors does not include the voice of other community members in addition to the governments reasoning as to why tent cities are detrimental to…
After receiving some money from some people, the man gets up and gets into a newer vehicle. According to a waitress in the restaurant, the man was there for a couple hours and quite a few people stopped to give him money (Frances Marion, personal communication, September 9, 2015). Mrs. Matthews states that she has a great insight of the homeless population from volunteering at her church’s weekly soup kitchen (Sarah Matthews, personal communication, September 16, 2015). Many who are homeless are men and veterans who have mental problems and many have arrest records. O’Connor (2006) states that mental illness and substance abuse are the most common deficiencies associated with homelessness and is rarely a choice (p. 239).…

The steadily increasing rate of homelessness in Chicago is a social justice issue that is difficult to ignore. It is nearly impossible to walk down Michigan Avenue without noticing the countless shivering, hungry people begging for spare change. But the people we see on our everyday route to school and work are only a very small portion of the thousands of people suffering throughout the city. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council defines homelessness as “…an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other instable or non-permanent situation”(1). Chicagoans may think they know about the issue of homelessness…

This academic journal begins on reporting about Cynthia Bogard and her documentation on “The natural history of a Social Problems”. She successfully defined how homelessness came to be social problems in New York City and Washington, D.C. The “iron quadrangle”(player) involved in the issues were activist group, the government, experts, and the mass media. The media (CCNV) was good at creating event that attracted sympathetic coverage and also persuades the nation that only federal action could resolve this problem. But the opposite happened in President Reagan offices, they try to deny the problems and blame it on the homeless instead.…
