It’s So Hard Being Different How does one function in today’s world with a social disorder like Asperger’s Disorder? I was lucky enough to spend an entire day with an amazing fifteen year old named Blake who suffers from Asperger’s. I knew some of the characteristics that come along with this disorder, but at the same time I am not sure what to expect from a teenage boy, who in theory is expected to constantly be in social situations. I was a little nervous, because I know this disorder can alter his emotions very rapidly; he has bad days, and he has good days. I am hoping this is one of his good days. My day started bright and early just like his usually does. I was at his house by 8:00 am, and already he was on his computer doing his own research. Blake is extremely interested in different cultures, so he is constantly trying to learn something new. From my observation, I would say he spent most of his time reading about the Korean language and alphabet. I thought this seemed a little silly and a complete waste of time, but in his eyes, this was fascinating and useful. There were several notebook pages full of symbols that are actually Korean words, and he spends several hours a day working on this.
