Personal Narrative: My Biggest Life Challenge

Decent Essays
My biggest life challenge is speaking up and believing in myself. Growing up, I always played basketball because that’s what my family wanted all us kids to do. I come from a “legacy” of excellent ball players from softball to basketball. Everyone expected my cousins and I to carry on the talent. I had some talent and was decent at basketball, but fell short to my cousins. My family always critiqued my games and pointed out what I did wrong even when I thought I played well. I worked as hard as I could in hopes of meeting everyone’s expectations, but continually seemed to fall short. The criticism did not help either; it lowered my self-worth and esteem. I never believed I would be as good as my cousins and felt everyone preferred my cousins

The things about challenges are overcoming them, and telling your friends and family about what you faced, in my case the challenge I faced changed the way I think about beautiful things, and about my life. How can something so beautiful be so treacherous? I was so happy enjoying my day, but within seconds…pure joy turned into fear. It was a beautiful day spent at schliterbahn, but hours being in the same placed bored me. I asked my brother for permission to go to the island, since it meant just crossing the bridge and there it was.…

A meaningful challenge I faced was trying to make my school’s varsity soccer team. I’m not the best soccer player, but this challenge taught me that hard work can definitely make up for talent. It also taught me about resilience and perseverance. My sophomore year I failed to score in the championship game that costed my team win. I felt defeated because not only had I let down myself, but also my team because they were depending on me to do my job…

Overcoming my Struggles As a little boy, going to bed was the best part of the night. It is when your eyes are hanging low and you are doing everything you can to stay awake to hear a story that your mother reads to you before she tucks you in bed. Hearing and understanding words as a little boy was not that hard for me. I could comprehend words and say them, but as I started to go to school my parents knew something was not right. In my opinion, my struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) continue to be a challenge with the struggles I had before I found out about my diagnoses, finding out about my Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) changing the way I did things, and continuing to overcome my challenges I have with Attention Deficit…

Describe an obstacle that you needed to overcome and how you did it: One of the only obstacles I feel like I have had is in basketball. Up until Junior year, I hardly ever shot the ball during the game. I was more focused passing to someone else to give them a wide open shot, without realizing that I was the one wide open. Almost all my coaches told me to shoot more but I almost always forgot to look for my chances to score, I wanted to get assists not baskets.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

What separates me from my peers is the purpose I have with everything I do in life. I’m aspiring to be something larger than what everyone else would be content with. Ever since I was 5 years old, I would listen to my grandfather recite Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches that he would present to thousands of people. As I became older, I took it upon myself to research all the things he did for other people rather than himself. He lived with such selfless values, in which, he wanted to not only cause change for African Americans but for the fairness and entitlement every American had.…

My whole life I’ve been a little different. From the clothes I wear and the way I present myself, to the way I look at the world, I’ve always been somewhat peculiar. Not peculiar in a bad way, but in an interesting, provocative kind of way. I am the weird greenish-yellow crayon in the box that no one ever uses. I was born in Anchorage, Alaska.…

In the course of my life, I have overcome numerous situations with varying degrees of challenges. The most memorable was making my high school dance team. I viewed the challenge of making the team differently than the most average of dancers trying out. I had to work even harder than they did to make the team because my experience was less than average. At first, my observation of the other contenders dance skills terrified me causing enormous waves of self-consciousness.…
