Personal Narrative: How To Break A Norm

Improved Essays
Lets Make it A Hobby One of my hobbies is to break a norm. When I first heard about breaking a norm was in 2014, one of my friends mentioned it while we were talking about my major, psychology. She told me she is in a class where she needs to break a norm, I personally did not knew what that meant until she explained it. After she explained that breaking the norm is basically going against what society considers to be normal, I realized what I was missing as a person. When I came to United States, I was bullied and judged in a negative way because of the way I dressed and acted. In other words, I was unique, different from my schoolmates. When I was in Iran I always wanted to be different, but when I came here because of the judgements, …show more content…
When I did that, her first reaction was to look away like she doesn't know me, except she knew me, because I was sitting next to her in her car. When she realized that she doesn't have the option of portending that she has no relations with me, she started looking at the traffic light with an ashamed and look on her face. On the other hand when the lady drove away, her scape made my friend burst into laughing. She also hit me in the art while asking if I am out of my mind. After I told her about my break a norm project, she made me realized how many other times I had broken the norm. She was also able to be a little more relaxed and accepting of it as supposed to other times she would give me lectures about how I shouldn't be doing this (breaking norms) because people would think of me differently. Also they are going to judge her because she has a friend like me. For some reason this time it was okay for her to see me break a norm, in my opinion, because this time I had a good reason for what I was doing. I think this project was very interesting because this I got to learn many lessons from it. I learned that by having a reason it makes people more accepting of your doings. Perhaps because it gives them a gateway into understanding your situation. Also by acting like the norm that you are going to break is actually a normal situation for you will also allow other people feel comfortable. For example, I acted like rolling down the window and asking for where to eat is a normal activity for me. Therefore, the lady in the other car, felt more comfortable to answer me, rather than totally ignoring me. I was also able to realize that people are more responsive to someone who is well dressed, has a soft tone, and tries to be nice; I made sure that day I would be presentable. This study was very amusing, I wondered what is a norm any ways? I mean if I

I broke the social norm Thursday evening around seven-thirty at the Olive Garden in Hialeah, Fl. The restaurant was busy at the time of arrival. The majority of the customers looked to have a Latin background, while the rest were black or white. Everyone seems to be middles class civilians. The atmosphere of the restaurant was welcoming, loud, energetic, and friendly.…

In the beginning of the semester, she and I had a couple fallouts, which resulted in me getting kicked out of class. Never in a million years did I envision myself asking her for help. During our conference, I told her about my struggles with writing and previous academic adversities. I talked to her about being in a high level class and feeling confused, misunderstood and out of place. I talked to her about the importance of education and graduation in my family.…

When it comes to normative social influence, it is the influence of other people that leads us to conform (so we can be accepted). And as we know, social norms are powerful. As people continued to step onto that elevator, look at me, and then ignore me or share a ‘look’ with their companion, the violation of a social norm I was committing became even more salient. Just like we when accidentally say ‘you too’ when our server says to enjoy the food, or when our phone rings very loudly in public and everyone turns to stare in disdain. My heart was beating quickly and I was probably staring a hole in the wall for the entire duration.…

In this paper, I am writing about two norm violations I witnessed along with one norm violation I committed myself. In order for myself to understand the different types of norm violations I had to watch videos as well as identify what a norm was. For example, a norm that is not strictly enforced is called folkways. Other norms however are taken much more seriously in which we insist on conformity and these are called mores (Henslin pg.51). “Norms are expectations of ‘right’ behavior” (Henslin pg.49).…

As a fairly passive person, I knew that I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and do something I would not normally do; my roommate and I went to Target on a Saturday morning, before it got too crowded, and I decided to intrude on employees and other shopper’s personal space. I went up to the first employee, a young man in his late teens/20s, and asked him where the notebooks were, while standing maybe a half of a foot away from him, making complete eye contact. Immediately he started to back up and was a bit flustered before telling me where to look. According to my roommate who was watching from a distance, he also somewhat raised his hands from his sides, like he was ready to push me away. Another employee, an older woman, took a few steps…
