Jihad, in popular western media this word translates to Holy war. However as stated above Islamic teaching regard life as sacred, if we translate the words "holy war" back into Arabic, we find ‘Harbun Muqaddasatu’. It is the belief of modesty and includes behaviour as well as dress for both males and females. Today modesty rules are open to a wide range of interpretations. Some Muslim women will wear full-body garments that only expose their eyes. Some cover every part of the body except their face and hands. Some believe only their hair or their cleavage is compulsory to hide, and others do not observe any special dress rules. In the West, many regard traditional Muslim dress like the hijab as a sign of oppression, with women forced to wear the garments by men. But it is not as simple as that: many women choose to wear the hijab as a sign of faith, feminism, or simply because they want to. However not all Islamic women have this form of freedom, in countries such as Afghanistan; who have been influenced by their former fundamentalist government the Taliban, women are forced to wear the burqa (a head to toe garment that only displays the eyes) at all times in public, all because according to Taliban orators, "the face of a woman is a source of corruption" for men not related to them. If dress code is not followed they face the public beating and execution.
