In the final decades of the nineteenth century the main Protestant denominations began to adjust their beliefs in order to bring them into line with modern scientific and social thoughts" (Bruce 68). In the United States we have people who are either liberals or conservatives. Liberals are open to new ideas and are willing to discard old ones as they see fit. Conservatives don't change traditional values, they values they have stay the same. Even in the United States these two groups go back in forth on ways they see things and how things are handled. Bruce talks about how religion plays a huge part on what we see today. Every group has their own views on different matters. People today debate if women should have an abortion. They argue about when life starts and if it’s morally wrong to kill a fetus. “Fundamentalists were provoked into campaigning by cultural and social changes that reminded them of their increasing marginality: the black consciousness, feminist, anti-Vietnam war, gay rights and hippy movements; increasing sexual submissiveness and recreational drug use; mass media portrayals of sexuality; the legalization of abortion and the acceptability of divorce” (Bruce 73). Bruce talks about how things have changed and how some things are the same due to two groups fighting over what they think will go with their beliefs. Liberals are open to gay marriages while conservatives are not. Both groups debate if its right or wrong for same sex marriages. Conservatives would say no because it goes against what the Bible says, while liberals are open to changing their views and morals. I think religion and values are always going to play a role in the way we move
