Before the time of the Crusades the Christians that lived had no arguments with the muslims. Before the year 1200, 9 out of 10 people living in Europe were peasant farmers who had barely anything to live on (Biel). This meant that many of the people living in Crusading time were poor and had nothing. They didn’t have anything, but these men still went on the crusades. The royal people had all the wealth. Before Alexius I came to rule the Seljuk Turks had already taken a lot of land and property from the Byzantine Empire “Crusades”. Alexius I was a war general before he came to power. Alexius I came to power after the Empire had already fallen so Alexius I needed to rebuild the Empire. He instantly sent word to Pope Urban II asking for help. Pope Urban II got the message from Alexius I asking for help repelling the Turkish threat “Crusades”. Pope Urban II took the message and in november 1095, at the council of cleremont, proposed that Christians in the west aid the Byzantines in the east “Crusades”. Many of the men that responded had to be peasants. They had nothing to live on and they still answered the call to aid the Byzantines and reclaim the holy land. Many men marched into battle wearing a cross as a symbol of the Church “Crusades.” There were many fights fought in the first crusade that were successful.
The first crusade was one of the only successful crusades and left destruction to the muslims so that they could reclaim Jerusalem. There were multiple waves of crusaders in the first crusade which allowed them to leave destruction to turkish forces. The first wave was stopped in the first major battle between Crusaders and Muslims “Crusades”. Shortly after, there was a second wave of Crusaders killed many Jews, which caused conflict later in Jewish - Christian relations “Crusades”. All of this destruction led to the first crusades
