Historically, social movements and technological advancements have been major events promoting the growth in nursing. World War II create one of the major changes in healthcare, women played a major role in the military medical units. Consequently, there was a shortage of nurses in America, so a two-year associate degree in nursing (AND) was developed in desire to quickly train nurses to acquire a minimum skills level. Koernig & Hayes (2016) stated that ADN programs since then have increased at a higher rate than BSN programs (p.477). The American Nurses Association (ANA) had a great influence in the change that nurse’s education took place in institutions of higher education, so nurses were prepared in hospital-based diploma programs by 1965. Many opportunities for nurses in coming changes will be available and will be ways to help design the future of healthcare. Because of social movements and technologic advances, the profession of nursing has growth and developed in levels of higher education, expanded practice, and the advanced practice role. Also, nursing practice has been affected by medical advances and cost containment strategies. Information technology, computers, and systems have changed the way nursing is perceived. A new level of consumerism is expected in the future as well as an older population. Telecommunication would become the prefer way to receive healthcare for both patients and healthcare providers. In vision to the future, many themes emerge like non-physician providers will expand and will be responsible for primary care. Healthcare practice will be focus on what the consumer demands thus nursing education will be shaped to meet these new demands for practice and perform the roles.
