A gene that codes for COMT, it is an enzyme that can break down the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine delivers signals to the brain for pain. COMT depletes the supply in the brain. This causes freeing receptors to bind to endorphins, which causes pain relief. However, researchers show that not one gene can affect a person's pain tolerance, but play a very big role in it. A key factor that kept recurring in my study is pain tolerance and physcology. This idea explains that some people experience pain tolerance with “mind over matter.” Some people are able to control their pain consciously. An example would be someone training to let their mind go somewhere else to result in not focusing on one's own pain.
Researching more I found that there are many factors and ideas that play a role in pain tolerance. There is many contributors that can influence pain tolerance as well. This includes : gender, age, well being, health, attitude, and smoking cigarettes. All can play little factors in a person’s pain tolerance.
