“A hero is one who steps up when everybody else backs down.” When someone is brave enough to step up or help at tough times it makes them a better person and shows that they can truly be a hero. Heroism means being brave and taking actions in times of crisis; heroes aren’t afraid to do what is right even though nobody else may agree. Heroes are brave and courageous no matter what challenge they face. An example of someone who is a hero could be Frederick Douglass, who was an African-American social reformer. Even though he was frightened to speak in front of a group of people (mostly white), he still mustered up courage to speak about people’s rights as he had said in his autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, …show more content…
The truth was, I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down.” This quote shows that even though he was afraid, he still took the chance and overcame his fear. In addition, another example of a hero who is brave would be Martin Luther King Jr, the leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Even though many people were going against him and he could’ve died because of his protests, he stilled showed courage against the violence and kept on protesting for what he thought was right. As said by the Nobel Prize about Martin Luther King Jr, “He was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times. This shows that even though he had gone through all of that, he still didn’t back down and showed courage to speak up. Another hero who was brave and courageous was Nelson Mandela who was president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He is considered a hero because he fought against apartheid even after being kept in jail for twenty years. Rosa Parks, an activist in the Civil Rights Movement, would be a great example of someone who is valiant and bold because she had stood up and refused to give her seat away even though she knew that she would be arrested. She had said, “When that white driver stepped back towards us, when he waved his hand and ordered us up and out of our seats, I felt a determination cover my body like a quilt on a winter night.” This quote shows that Rosa Parks wasn’t afraid to, stand up and do what was right. Also, Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian Independence movement, was another hero who was valiant because he still fought against British rule even though he was jailed several times. For support, Biography Online had said that, “Gandhi led the famous salt march that resulted in many hundreds being arrested but wasn’t afraid to keep going.” This quote shows that he wasn’t afraid to lead a march that resulted in many being arrested even though he himself could be arrested yet again. In addition, Harriet Tubman, an American abolitionist, is a hero who was valiant and bold because the risk to help other slaves was terror-strickening and life-threatening but she kept helping. According to Biography Online, “With the aid of other abolitionists, she made returning trips to Maryland.” This quote proves that she isn’t afraid or terror-stricken by saying that she had risked her life and boldly went back to
