He is instantly drawn to her, and knows immediately that they are soon going to fall in with one another. In the beginning of their relationship, he wants to get close to her so that he can attain a deeper insight into the world of love. He believes that this will help him to better achieve enlightenment, but he doesn’t yet understand that love and respect must be earned. Through this adventure, he learns that true love must be built over time and it has to be a mutual feeling. This is one of the most important lessons that he learns throughout the book. Eventually, he leaves Kamala to continue to his journey to find himself, and she isn’t surprised by this news. Hesse writes, “in the midst of her pain and loss, she rejoiced that she had pressed him so close to her heart on that last occasion, [she] had felt so completely possessed and mastered by him” (Hesse 85). She is satisfied that she was able to play a role in his path to enlightenment and she feels that her job to teach him about love and affection is done. When she releases the songbird after his departure, it signifies that Siddhartha is experiencing awakening, which is a pivotal moment in the story.
