Many plays and novels use contrasting places to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. In Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha, the son of a Brahman goes on a quest for knowledge and to be enlightened. He had many experiences on land that helped in his quest for spiritual enlightenment, but he was never fully satisfied with the knowledge he learned and was still thirsty for more.
