The German empire sanctioned the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Herero ethnic group in the first genocide of the twentieth century. Approximately 65,000 out of 80,000 people perished. Men, women, and children died from direct execution by the German Schutztruppe (colonial army), dehydration after deportation to the Kalahari Desert, or forced labor and starvation in concentration camps.
