Healthcare-Associated Infections: While hospital visits are intended to help treat illnesses, there are some instances where the opposite actually happens. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections that occur while a patient is getting treated for a medical or surgical condition1. This includes many different infections ranging from pneumonia to surgical infections1. An HAI may seem highly unlikely and is probably the last thing on a patients mind when going to the hospital, but HAIs are much more common than many would think. A research study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2011 found that 1 in every 25 hospital patients at any point in time, are suffering from a HAI2. The high prevalence of HAIs results in costs for the hospital that range anywhere from $28.4 to $45 billion in order to treat the HAIs as well as an estimated 75,000 HAI related deaths in 20112. HAIs are so common because of the countless ways in which they can occur. As stated before, the term HAI encompasses many different infections and therefore can be acquired in many different ways if the healthcare administrators are not careful. Additionally, HAIs are not isolated to simply one nation, but can happen anywhere there is healthcare being provided. A few of the common factors for HAIs are post-surgery complications, use and maintenance of medical devices (especially catheters and ventilators), and infections simply spreading from hospital staff to its patients2.
