Personal Narrative: My Clinical Experience

Improved Essays
My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.
In addition, I learned that it is imperative to wash my hands for at least 15 seconds to reduce the risk of transferring micro-organisms and putting patients at the risk of cross-contamination. Personal hygiene has an

As a student nurse I require second development in infection control, so I can contribute to safe practice and decrease the spread of infections in nursing care. Patients in the health care settings have an increased risk of acquiring infections due to nosocomial infections which is also known as health care-associated infection. This infection occurs after admission to a health care facility due to transmission of microorganisms (Potter & Perry, 2014, p. 624). “Clients are becoming more difficult to treat. Health care- associated infections results in significant morbidity, mortality, and cost” (Sydnor & Perl, 2011).…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Life has a way of hitting us with all kinds of obstacles along the way; we have all had experiences that have shaped who we are. The life experiences and hardships I have walked through will definitely shape my interactions with patients. I have always said that the way you treat a patient (or co-worker, family member, etc) says a lot about who you are as a person and my life experiences have prepared me to have calm and compassionate interactions. I have never been in any critical condition myself, but I have had family who was. As we can all imagine, when a loved one is diagnosed with a disease or has passed away, there is a tremendous amount of sorrow felt.…

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…

The best way to prevent the spread of germs at a hospital is meticulous handwashing. When shadowing, it would be vital that I wash my hands as directed by hospital protocol before and after having contact with a patient, after using the restroom or having any contact with body fluids, and before eating or preparing food. If a patient is on any isolation precautions, it would be essential that I wear the required protective wear. It would also be important that the equipment use by patients for physical therapy be properly sanitized or safely discarded.…

Hospital acquired infections are particularly challenging because many of these infections have developed antibiotic resistance (Pollack, 2010; Rosenberg, 2015). However, most hospital acquired infections are preventable through a variety of techniques, including the use of hand washing, equipment sterilization, use of gloves, sanitizing surfaces, among other things (Mehta et al., 2014; Monistrol, Calbo, Riera, Nicolas, Font, Freixas, & Garau, 2012; U.S Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). The key here is consistency, and a hospital culture committed to reducing and even eliminating hospital acquired…

Ongoing staff training is necessary, however in one healthcare setting it was found that none of the staff had attended ongoing education regarding infection control. Furthermore, 32% of practices visited were found to not have ongoing training in infection control for their staff. “This means that the staff did not have access to the most up to date information and guidance with regards to infection control procedures, which would help them maintain a safe and clean environment” (Infection Control). Ultimately, nurses are responsible for the providing a safe, hygienic environment for their patients, and while foundational education is important, there must be ongoing training for all staff, not just…
