In such cases, hands should be washed with a non-antimicrobial cleanser and water, or with an antimicrobial cleanser and water. In all other clinical circumstances, routine cleaning ought to be performed on hands that are not obviously visible soiled by utilizing an alcohol-based handrub (Srejic, 2009).

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…

Infection caused due to hospital acquired microbes is an evolving problem worldwide, and horizontal transmission of bacterial organisms continues to cause a high nosocomial infection rate in health care settings. Nosocomial infections due to poor hand hygiene are a major cause of increasing morbidity, mortality and health care costs among hospitalized patients worldwide. (1) These infections are the most common adverse events resulting from a stay in the hospital affecting approximately 5 to 10% of hospitalized patients in the developed world (2) and 19.1% in developing countries. The impact of health care-associated infections (HCAIs) implies prolonged hospital stay, long-term disability, increased resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobials,…

Effectiveness of Hand Hygienerevealed out of 75 identified opportunities to offer patient HH, it was offered on only one occasion. More than half of patients reported they were not offered HH, despite nurses’ acknowledgment of patient HH in controlling and preventing HAIs (Ardizzone, Smolowitz, Kline, Thom, & Larson, 2013). HCPs in an out-patient clinic who stated they frequently avoided touching their face touched it at the same rate as those who reported only occasionally or rarely touching their face (Elder et al., 2014). Although direct observation is expensive and time consuming, it is the gold standard to monitor HH adherence (WHO, 2009). Direct observation typically evaluates simply whether HH was performed, rather than HH quality or effectiveness.…

Describe each method separately: Transmission of microorganisms on the hands of healthcare workers is the most common cause of cross infection, occurring directly from patient contact or indirectly via contact with the environment. Maxfield & Dull (2011) postulated that the culture of workers and the atmosphere in a hospital have to consider infection department to be facilitators of hand hygiene practice. The staff ought to encourage healthcare workers as well as patients to comply with the hygiene practices. It was suggested by Ott & French (2009) that the hygiene practices involving hands goes beyond education and trainings. This is mainly because compliance has to do with a continued motivation that is focused on sustained change. Healthcare workers view hand hygiene as a means of preventing healthcare-related infections to patients (Creedon, 2006; O’Boyle et al. 2001).…

Naikoba and Hayward (2001) prove this by stating, “Handwashing is widely accepted as being key to the prevention-acquired infection but the frequency of handwashing by healthcare workers has been found to be low. The aim for a medical office is to help increase handwashing by educating the staff, providing written reminders, and to provide feedback. These actions help the medical professional gain understanding about the importance of handwashing and how this helps protect the patient and the medical staff. The process of adding reminders in exam rooms and in the restrooms, helps the professional remember to wash before leaving or upon entering the room. Another effective element to help increase handwashing in to add moisturizing soaps.…

Hand hygiene became the cornerstone of strategy because it is simple, standardized, cost-efficient, and based on solid scientific evidence (Wilkinson & Treas, 2011, p. 423) to prevent the spread of infection. However, as simple as hand washing can still have complications like compliance and adherence in daily nursing practice that resulted to an extensive struggle. One study have shown that the “main challenge is to ensure implementation of and compliance with the evidenced-based recommendations in daily nursing practice” (Vandijck et al., 2010). Hand hygiene expectations are greatly influenced with behavioral attitudes, such as “perceived value of hand washing as a personal benefit, peer pressure, and perceived difficulty in undertaking”…

I am a member of the infection disease council at my workplace and have seen benefits and drawbacks with the monthly hand hygiene audits that I have performed over the past years. The data is gathered from an observation method that requires us to monitor at least ten health care workers and their compliance with proper hand hygiene techniques in their nursing units. Meaningful and descriptive data is collected by a trained observer’s eye that monitors workers compliance to the hand hygiene policies in place. Often the numbers are skewed when staff recognizes and alerts others to the purpose of my presence on their hospital unit. Workers understand why I am there and will consciously follow proper hand washing protocols.…
