Health issues affect the population and provide stress towards the individual. These issues can vary in existence. Diabetes mellitus, often shortened to diabetes, refers to a group of diseases that affect the body’s usage of glucose (Torpy, 2011). Torpy (2011) defines glucose as the sugar acting as source of energy for the muscle cells, tissue cells and the brain. The two prominent forms of diabetes are called type 1 and type 2, and gestational diabetes. I am going to focus on type 1 and type 2 diabetes as they carry considerable long term effects. This paper will address the causes, severities, organizations, and intervention programs related to diabetes.
Causes
Collazo-Clavell et al. (2014) talked about the variety of causes for type 1 and type 2 diabetes on MayoClinic.org. The direct causes for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are currently unknown (Collazo-Clavell, Davidson, & Moreland, 2014).The reason that type 1 diabetes exists is due to our immune system damaging the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This causes loss of insulin and leads to sugar build-up in the bloodstream. Type 1 diabetes is believed to have been caused by bot genetic and environmental factors. However, the specific factors have not been figured out yet. Type 1 diabetes most commonly appears in childhood or adolescence.
