Half Day Prayer Retreat Essay

Decent Essays
As a group we decided that the half-day prayer retreat would be the most practical and beneficial to all of us. We chose not to do the service project because we could not find a block of time that we all had available to plan and complete a project. We chose not to host a worship service because no one in our group had experience leading worship or playing instruments. Ultimately, We felt that the prayer retreat would work best given our talents and abilities. As we understood it, the purpose of this project was not to simply work for a grade or complete the assignment because we had to. We all wanted this project to have a deeper purpose for each of us personally: taking something away from what we learned by working together. We …show more content…
The Bible also gives us many examples that we can follow in our spiritual walk in both the Old and New Testament. Many of King David’s Psalms, for example, illustrate the importance of prayer, such as Ps. 5:3 “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch” and Ps. 39:12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears!” Also, Jesus was a great example to follow and learn from in his ministry and teachings. Jesus taught the disciples how to pray in Matt. 6, and he also gives us warnings about the hypocrites and how they pray and how we should avoid them. Additionally, Jesus is seen praying many, many times all throughout His ministry. Here are many other examples found in the Bible: Ps 66:17, Ps 145:18, Prv. 15:29, Jer. 29:12, Jer. 33:3, Mt. 18:20, Mk. 11:24, Acts 1:14, Rm. 8:26, Rm. 12:12, Phil. 4:6-7, Col. 4:2, 1 Thess. 5:17, 1 Tim. 2:8, Jm. 4:8, Jm. 5:16, 1 Jn. 5:14, 1 Jn. 5:15. There are many different kinds of prayer found in the Bible. Praise, confession, thanksgiving, petition, and intercession are some of the types mentioned in class lecture. We believe we used a mixture of all of these when we prayed. Philippians 4:6 provides us an excellent example of prayer, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God:” Jacob, “[this verse] shows us that we should

Although many protestant religions are known for their improvised prayer, the Jewish tradition includes some unrehearsed prayer as well. The major difference between Jewish and Christian prayer is the presence of the Holy Spirit and Jesus in Christian prayer. However, this makes sense since Jews only use the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, as their holy scripture, and do not believe in the Holy…

Some of the prayers which are now recited within Christian churches come from Jewish Origins (Religion: Christianity). These include“early Christian prayers” which “ are quotations or adaptations from Jewish originals.” Some of these prayers were taken from the Apostolic Constitutions and the Didache. Of all of the prayers that come from Judaism, the one that is most commonly known is “The Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father which art in heaven”).” The Lord’s Prayer includes three things that are seen within Jewish Prayers: praise, petition, and longing for the Kingdom of God to come (Lord’s Prayer).…

Project For our GVNSA community service project my class wanted to reach a pediatric population that was often in dire need of care and services. We put our heads together and decided that the population that was speaking to our hearts were the foster children of the Des Moines area. Foster children often get taken out of their homes and must move quickly with only a few supplies. The focus of the project was creating ‘go packs’ for these children or quick overnight bags that they could take with them in a hurry. The ‘go packs’ contained necessary supplies such as, toothbrushes, clothes, small toys, blankets, and pamphlets about vaccinations.…

Growing up in a Mexican American household, most likely one is to be raised Catholic. Therefore, as a young boy it became ordinary to follow and believe in what my parents instilled in me. Furthermore, I never had the courage to explore any other religion and get a sense of what other religions are about. However, now that I am taking Social Work 461 with Dr. Tillman, one of my assignments is to attend a religious service that is held by a group that is different from mine. As a result, I decided to attend a Buddhist temple to get an insight of what the Buddhist religion is about.…

Luke 11:1-13 demonstrates the disciple’s desire to become more like the one they are following, Jesus, through their prayer life. As his close followers, they have the ability and insight to understand that prayer is the most crucial aspect of Jesus’ rule and reign here on earth, more so than his ability to perform miracles or speak eloquently in parables. The disciples ask for guidance in what they deem the most important feature of life, be it theirs or Jesus’. As Jesus provides them with the guidance they request, he gives them an outline to follow—he is not saying that they must pray for the exact things that he does, but rather, that there is a proper way to address God; it is a way of humbly beseeching God for what they need while still…

My spiritual journey of faith has turned me into more of a “mutt” than a “purebred” Christian because of the variety of denominations and international churches that I have experienced so far in my life. For starters, I grew up in a “every Sunday” church family. In fact, I was at church the very next Sunday after being born. My first church was part of the Assemblies of God. However, a few years later my parents divorced and we ended up at a non-denomination church, where I spent the next 20 years.…
