GVSA Community Service Project Analysis

Project
For our GVNSA community service project my class wanted to reach a pediatric population that was often in dire need of care and services. We put our heads together and decided that the population that was speaking to our hearts were the foster children of the Des Moines area. Foster children often get taken out of their homes and must move quickly with only a few supplies. The focus of the project was creating ‘go packs’ for these children or quick overnight bags that they could take with them in a hurry. The ‘go packs’ contained necessary supplies such as, toothbrushes, clothes, small toys, blankets, and pamphlets about vaccinations. With the help of the community and the student body we hoped to raise money and supplies for over 100 foster children in the Des Moines area going through the Department of Human Services. With all of us working together it didn’t take long to come up with a game plan of how we wanted to go about successfully completely this project. We divided the project between clinical groups and each group had a different age range. Monday’s clinical group had school-aged children, Tuesday’s clinical group had high school, and Wednesday’s clinical group

It was a fun way to work as a team and accomplish a much-needed task in the community. This project bettered the lives of children in the Des Moines area that do not have much which, in return is more rewarding than a lot of accomplishments in life. Through this project I learned how to conduct a community service project if I wanted to one in the future. Simple delegation and time management is all that is needed to make a project like this successful. Knowing that we helped a small population with a small class, I can only imagine how many children a group at a hospital could help if they all worked

My big home project was accomplished at Chase High School instead of it being completed at my home. Mrs. Kraus provided me and a fellow student ( Ashlyn Cox) the opportunity to clean the concession stand in the gymnasium so it would be clean for the Prom. We cleansed the concession stand with Oxygen Orange which is an all purpose cleaner and can clean almost anything. Prior to heading to the location we gathered four wash rags and we each had our own bottle of Oxygen Orange. When we arrived to the concession stand it was an absolute mess.…

For my service project, my group went to the DC Diaper Bank to learn about the existing problems that many low-income families face, as well as to assist the drive in any way we could. When we first got there, we watched an introductory video that informed us about just how much support families in the area need. I was stunned to learn that forty-four percent of children under that age of three live in low-income families in the DC area. The parents of those children are struggling financially to make ends meet, and individuals in the community felt compelled and created the DC Diaper Bank. The video also informed us that babies who do not have clean diapers are more likely to cry more, which has an extremely negative impact on the development of their body and minds.…

The Toberman Neighborhood Center project was fun and an amazing experience. Being a photographer I found while completing some parts made me feel to shy to ask others for help. My professor encouraged me to “get out of my comfort zone” and start asking them myself if they allowed me to take photos of them for the project, which generally is quite significant. At first I did not have any courage to ask them I simply thought I was interrupting them and invading their personal space The interactions with the organization showed me what goodness really does in society and they love to change the world and the lives of others in a subtle way.…

This team taught me that hard work, determination and time management are key to maintaining a sophisticated life. Throughout my high school career I was a member of the Community Housing Works program, which consisted of hundreds of volunteering hours towards; tutoring elementary school children in addition to teaching them the basics of English. Hands on work with these children reminded me of myself ten years ago, struggling with school assignments that I had no clue how to solve. Children taught me to think and see things from a different perspective, they taught me the importance of imagination and that patience truly is a…

Statistics flashed across a screen, solemn music accompanied a slideshow of scenes showing desolate landscapes and impoverished communities. On screen, a mother held her starving child and a group of girls in mismatched clothes gathered water from a muddy well. We watched a presentation given to us before the service event and listened to the instructor as he described the conditions in other countries. He showed us photos of the people we would be helping during the mission, communities that were in desperate need of donations, supplies, and most importantly, food. The Lifeline food packing mission was my first service experience, which was the case for most of the students who participated, and it as also one of the first glimpses we had of just how bad the situations are in countries where starvation and malnutrition are so common.…

One weakness in reference to the peer evaluation traits was my attitude towards the project. We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

This experience made me realize that if I do not educate myself professionally in child life, then I will not even be able to support the people closest to me. After this experience, I became more passionate about providing support for children and families in difficult situations, especially the hospital setting. I believe that children’s development and learning should be supported and encouraged regardless of situation, culture, race, religion, gender, age, and socioeconomic status. Child life…

The community service project I chose to do was to volunteer at the Meridian Food Bank. It qualifies as a community service project because the Meridian Food Bank gives food to people/families that don’t have enough money to buy their own food. I volunteered on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 from 2-6pm. The Meridian Food Bank is located at 133 W Broadway Ave, Meridian.…

This last summer I traveled to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and worked in a home that was non profit and dedicated to keeping children for up to three days at a time to allow parents to work and not have to hire a baby sitter. I prepared meals and fed two significant groups of younger children facing allergies, and preferences. I could not have had a better experience with these children, and growing up in a rural Iowa community I was overjoyed to spend a day with people of a different culture and learn about their background and the struggles they face in every day…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
