The topic is important in understanding how African-American males learn to navigate on their campuses. For students to have a full college experience, they have to learn how to balance academics, the campus culture, and their own personal identity. A qualitative approach was used to conduct 2 to 3 hour semi-structured individual interviews on campuses and follow-up interviews were conducted by phone (p.340) and a trajectory analysis method was used to understand what each participants’ experience in college, and how he experienced his respective HBCU campus. Each participant also completed a profile form that included a 10 point political orientation scale. The National Black Male College Achievement Study was the bases for the study. Data was collected from 219 students at 42 colleges in 20 different states. Campus presidents, provosts, deans of students, and senior student leaders identified African-American males to participate. (p. 339). The lead investigator visited all 42 campuses and conducted the face to face interviews with each participant. Semi structured interviews were conducted. Qualitative data analysis software program was used to identify invariant constituents. This allowed the researcher to understand the participants’ perspective of the politics on their campus and they were able to cluster three themes. Seventy-six men participated representing 12 HBCU campuses. No freshmen were a part of the study, a wide range of academic majors were included, and the participants self-reported a mixture of socioeconomic origins. No participants disclosed his sexual orientation. A trajectory analysis was used to understand the participants’ experiences in college. Relevant stories from all the participants approach used by the researcher was straight forward. I do trust the data and would use it as a part of my
