Stereotypes begin to feel as if they define your character. They have brainwashed us into thinking that we’ll never be able to accomplish such great heights; that we’ll never be anything exceeding a maid or a gardener. We have been placed in a box that limits what we can truly achieve. Generalizations have restrained our ambitions, therefore, we begin to settle for smaller goals because the negativity has clouded our visions and made us feel as if that’s all we can strive for. I, as a young Hispanic girl, can assist in mending the borders created by stereotypes by setting an example for my community. I do not have to live under the shadow of a stereotype; I can live above it. I will exceed the borders and go beyond what’s expected of myself. I will not let restrictions such as social stigmas hinder my ability to be successful.
We are all capable of making our own decisions and choosing how to live our lives. We can choose to believe in ourselves and ignore the negative generalizations made regarding us. We can choose to acquire an education and demonstrate that success is the best revenge. We can show all those who ostracize us for our skin tones, that we have the potential to be just as great, if not better.
