3.1 The effect of H. sabdariffa calyx extract on the antioxidant property.
Due to different parts of H. sabdariffa and extract in different ways, have different antioxidant activity. In some study, H. sabdariffa extracts from different parts were detected with some antioxidant capacity assays and determined that H. sabdariffa calyx has the high content of phenolic compounds associating to antioxidant, and have the significant effect on β-carotene bleaching. In freeze-drying, extract in cold water could perform well in some antioxidant property than in hot water, 80 % methanol. We had H. sabdariffa calyx been extracted by cool water and had to freeze-dry, then detected the DPPH scavenging capacity, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating activity,

The lack of antioxidant cause oxidative stress and excess free radicals that peroxide cell membrane and destroy it; break and even mutate double-strand deoxyribonucleic acid; change the structure of proteins and make the function exception. H. sabdariffa extract has been determined as a useful antioxidant, and we detected the reducing power capacity and expected had sound effects. We used BHA (100 µM) as standard and dilute the sample to designated concentrate (200-1000 µg/ml), and the absorption were 0.44 ± 0.01, 0.81 ± 0.01, 0.94 ± 0.06, 1.26 ± 0.09, 1.56 ± 0.10. At the concentration 400 µg/ml had better reducing power than the standard and had the significant effect of the high …show more content…
sabdariffa, and cold water was more appropriate than 80% (v/v) methanol to extract H. sabdariffa and possessed more DPPH scavenging capacity, however, 30% (v/v) methanol had the best appropriateness. Besides calyx, H. sabdariffa seeds also have been confirmed that have significant phenolic content, β-carotene bleaching, and DPPH scavenging capacity. H. sabdariffa calyx are widely applied in food and drink, and extracting in water is a basic and simple method, furthermore, the extract can be directly used. We detect antioxidant property at high concentration and most studies test extract at low concentrate (≦10 mg/ml); in our study, the extract at high concentrate (≧50 mg/ml) is more effective antioxidant than standard
