Group Counseling Type: Psychodrama
I chose to examine psychodrama because I am learning to lead it as a staff member at events conducted by the Mankind Project. I have limited experience at this time but have witnessed its cathartic results first and second hand as both a leader and a protagonist.
Psychodrama therapy presupposes the client is committed to the action phase and beyond the contemplation phase in their own recovery.

When this is achieved, it becomes a safe and effective “place” to access, feel, and express, deep emotion which may be cathartic - resolving deep trauma, integrating the past with the present, and allowing the client the ability to feel hope for the future.
Limitations / Risks :
• Reliving a traumatic experience is not necessary to resolve it. It is only necessary to access the deep emotion surrounding the trauma with a representative process. • Extremely harmful occurrences can not be re-enacted due to the harm that might do to the protagonist. • The leaders of a psychodrama group have assignments as director, analyst, producer, therapist and each requires great sensitivity and training to assure the safety and well being of the protagonist / client. This can be a significant barrier to successfully conducting psychodrama therapy. • At times in psychodrama the “director” can switch roles to “standing in” as an auxiliary ego (speaking the role of an inner part of the protagonist) and this is fraught with issues of transference that could compromise
