Greta Lovisa Gustafson was born September 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden. She is most known for her acting during World War 2. She had the biggest impact than any other actress in the 20th century. Greta introduced method acting to the screen. She also made people reconsider how they pictured women on the screen. She was portrayed the most beautiful women that ever lived. With this beauty and style she began to become millions of people’s first pick in their heart. Greta was the youngest child in her family. When Greta was 13 she dropped out of school to take care of her father who was very ill. He passed away two years after that. This made her decide to live a life for herself. She didn’t stay for all of school though because she met Sweden’s main silent film director, Mauriz Stiller. They became partners in the film business. Stiller coached her into becoming a better actor. He also advised her to change her last name to Garbo. Greta moved to California in late 1925 because she was signed with Louis B. Mayer, the president of MGM. There she did her first american film The Torrent. Now Greta was an international star. The next few years and a few films later, Greta made more than 14% of MGM’s profit. Through Greta’s personality on the screen and off the screen, women were portrayed as something that was very new to everyone. Greta won 4 Academy Award Oscar for her “unforgettable performance”. In the 1930s she was one of the most highest paid women in America. Once World War 2 came around, Greta decided to take a break from the movie business.
