Hello everybody. My name is Elchin. Today I will talk about Greet Hofstede`s cultural dimensions.
Every manager should have deep knowledge about culture because we live in globalization time. What is culture? Culture is a system of values, beliefs, and norms shared among a group of people. People`s culture affect the values in the workplace. That’s why management processes should be different according to cultures and according to the people from different cultures in the workplace.
The most famous study about how culture relates to values in the workplace was conducted by Geert Hofstede. From 1967 to 1973 he did a long research among more than 1 million employees in IBM company. He identified 5

Collectivist countries are: Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia.
Masculinity and femininity dimension. In feminine society gender does not play an important role in any work. People value quality of life, relationship, solidarity etc. However in masculine cultures the difference between genders is more dramatic and people care about ambition, power, competitiveness etc. For example Japan, Mexico, USA, Great Britain are masculine countries but Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden are feminine countries.
Uncertainty avoidance. It is about the extent that members of a culture are tolerant to unknown or uncertain situations. In high uncertainty avoidance cultures people are not ready to take risks. They want clear directions. They worry about future. For them, everything that is different seems dangerous. So they put laws, instructions and rules to prevent uncertainty. For example in such cultures in business world when there is contract, that contract will be very detailed and specified. But in low uncertainty avoidance people are more relaxed toward changes and new things. They are more flexible. For example, China, Sweden, India, USA are low uncertainty avoidance societies but Turkey, Panama, France, Argentina are high uncertainty avoidance societies.
Long term and short term orientation. Long term orientation cultures focus on long term results. They invest and save more. Free time is not important. But in short term cultures people focus on quick
