Greek mythology has played an important and lasting role in Greek and later civilizations. Greek mythology deals with the stories of gods and heros. The Greeks used these stories to try to explain and justify why things were in the world that they lived in. These stories were involved and used in the everyday culture of the Greeks. There are many different types of myth and legends although, they are not true they still are useful in understanding ancient Greece and their culture. Myths are different than legends in that myths deal more with divine traditions and rituals while legends deal more with historical matters. The Greeks had about 12 main gods that they worshipped and can be found and record in their cultural interactions. Apollo is one of the main influential gods that the Greeks worshipped and revered due to his characteristics and attributes. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto. Zeus is viewed as the king of the gods and the god of the sky. Zeus is one of the most famous Greek god present and past. Zeus is married to the goddess Hera. Hera is viewed as the queen of the gods and the goddess of women. Zeus will have twins, Apollo and Artemis, with Leto. Leto is a Titan and is the goddess of motherhood and protector of the young. Hera does not like Leto and will pursue her when she is pregnant trying to get revenge. Leto will be able to find the island of Delos and will give birth.
