Students, from the time they enter school at a young age, “…have grown up understanding…” according to Joel and Eric Best (2013), “…that it is impossible to get ahead without a college degree.” (p. 113). However, it is getting harder and harder for students to attend college after high school, mostly due to the rising costs of tuition and living expenses on a college campus. There are a privileged few that are able to afford college out of pocket, but most have to attend a post-secondary institution taking out thousands of dollars in student loans. A problem does exist when it comes to the overall system of higher education, because “as college costs rose, fewer students were able to muster the resources needed to graduate from college debt-free.” (E. Best & J. Best, 2013, p. 48) However, there are ways to solve this problem, mostly by making sure that college is affordable to most, and making sure that college students receive degrees that would provide qualifications for a sustainable job in today’s market. The major issue when it does come to students being able to afford to attend a post-secondary institution is not being able to receive student loans, but about college being expensive to attend in the first place. A report by the College Board published in 2014 states that tuition increased by 3.7 percent and 2.9 percent for private universities and public universities, respectively, over the 2013-2014 academic year (Loren, 2014).
