What would you buy with 20,000 dollars? Maybe a new car, or a new TV, or a new computer, or a new cell phone, or even new clothes. In reality, 20,000 dollars can buy a lot of things, however, you can only buy a year of college tuition with 20,000 dollars. Isn’t that crazy? Since 1980, tuition costs at colleges and universities has risen to 757 percent (Cecillia Barr). In comparison to food and electricity costs which have only risen 150 percent and gasoline prices which has only risen 400 percent (Cecillia Barr). As a result, college tuition costs in America has become the fastest growing cost since 1980 and is beginning to become a really big problem in today’s society. Yes this is true, but the financial aid they receive, does not always cover the full amount of their tuition. So, they still face the problem of not being able to afford to go to college. Also, some people will say that these students should apply for scholarships, but scholarships are limited and only a certain amount of people receive them. Also, if these students do receive a scholarship, it doesn’t always cover the full amount of their tuition and some scholarships are on a first come first serve basis. So, most of these students still do not receive any scholarships. Therefore these students still end up not being able to afford to go to college. So the government still needs to lower college tuition and give these students an opportunity to be able to afford college and get a college degree like everyone else that comes from high income …show more content…
These students examine the average cost of tuition which is 20,000 dollars a year (Joydeep Roy). Then, they ask themselves if college is really worth that much money and they ask themselves if college is actually going to teach them anything. Many students end up not going to college because they think it’s not worth it because it cost so much to go each year. Therefore, the college admission rates and graduation rates keep decreasing each year, due to the lack of students deciding not to go to college because they see that less people are attending college and less people are graduating from college. So, they think it must be a waste of time. It’s not a waste of time. Therefore, the government needs to lower college tuition so these students will see the price lower and think that it isn’t that bad, so they will go to college, and the graduation and admission rates will go up, and more and more students will see the rates go up and will attend college because they will think it’s a big deal and not a waste of
