Before ascending to heaven, Jesus gave his followers one last command, often referred to as “The great Commission”. He says in Matthew 28:18-20, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” The primary task of every believer is to go and make disciples of all nations. It’s God’s desire that everyone hears the gospel of Jesus Christ. God did not give the task to angels because angels cannot share the gospel. They do not have souls and cannot experience salvation; therefore they cannot become witnesses of the saving grace of our Lord. This task is given to believers because we have personally experience salvation. Jesus commanded us to go and tell others what we have witnessed. Nevertheless, churches all over the world are experiencing a failure by its members to obey the great commission.
In a study conducted by LifeWay Research, the researchers found 80 percent of those who attend church one or more times a month, believe they have a personal responsibility to share their faith, but 61 percent have not told another person about how to become a Christian in the previous six months.
