Giotto Di Bondone,St.Francis Receiving the Stigmatization,C.1300 Giotto Di Bondone was an early renaissance painter who captured many works of art, a lot of them involving the church and christian religion.Giotto was born 1276 in Vespignano, Italy. Giotto was the student of the Florence painter Cimabue. Giotto contributed a lot of his early career to the creation of paintings in the upper chapel of the st.Francis of assisi church in Assisi that was later destroyed by Napoleon's church. Later he constructed what some saw as his most influential work which was a painted decoration in the Scrovegni Chapel. “The theme is Salvation, and there is an emphasis on the Virgin Mary, as the chapel is dedicated to the Annunciation” (“Giotto di Bondone the complete works” 1) which is mostly why it is so influential.Giotto painted St.Francis receiving the stigmatization in between both of these two events. This paintings main theme is realism and expression. In this picture everything is very natural. For example, the painting is being taken outside and St.Francis is on his knees instead of standing or praying in a conventional sense. Furthermore, Giotto mostly uses colors that coordinated to earth like green, and brown. Francis devotion to God because at Francis is the only one to revive the stigmation from God and it was because he resembled God so closely that God decided to show his faithfulness to the crucified by implanting him with the same 5 wounds that he had when crucified. This also shows the fortitude and jehdueidnntirock of saints because lots of them went through incredible feats of loyalty and some even gave there life's for what they believed in.
