Introduction:
The definition of Genetically Modified Organisms in the Britannica Encyclopedia is given as “Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is the organisms whose genome has been engineered in the laboratory in order to favor the expression of the desired physiological traits or the production of the desired biological products”. From the definition we can understand that the genome from the DNA can be altered or some sequence can be separated from the DNA and use it to enhance or mute (gene silencing) a certain type of traits in an organism. In some cases we can even amplify the genome to produce the hormone in excess so that we get the desired product in abundance. For example, the amount of iron in rice was quite low due to which most of the South Asian people were deficient in iron (as rice is the staple food in most of the Asian countries). So the scientists used the GMO technology to amplify the amount of iron in the rice. This rice is now known to be golden rice.
Gene modification process is known to humans since a long time. In ancient times, farmers have been cross breeding plants to get bigger in size and to increase the production of food. For example, banana would have been extinct by now, but due to cloning and gene modification we can still have a banana. In mid – 1900 most of the varieties of banana had developed a disease called Panama disease. Due to this almost all the types of banana were destroyed but Cavendish type of banana is resistance to this…
