Eight-hundred and seventy million humans in the world are starving and considered malnourished as reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. GMOs, that is, genetically modified organisms, can create many positive outcomes, such as, helping lessen the world’s starvation problem by the increase of food production due to the ability of genetic modifications. Further research and implementation of GMOs could improve everyday life for people of all social statuses from needy to prosperous. GMOs can reduce the needs for pesticides, increase the hardiness of food yielding plants, and increase the amount of nutrients. This increase of hardiness for certain organisms can allow them to grow in a more vast array of climates, granting more people food. The increased amount of nutrients and food will assist in giving the 870 million starving people more food with more nutrients. Despite these facts, many people still think GMOs should not be used in foods because they believe they are unbiblical and unethical because of the common belief that unnatural equals unhealthy; however the truth is quite the opposite. Pesticides are a chemical preparation for destroying plant, fungal, or animal pests as defined by Dictionary.com. Because GMOs can be genetically modified to be resistant to certain weeds and fungi there is not as great of a need for pesticides. Overall pesticide use on corn, soybeans, and cotton plummeted by about 2.5 million pounds after the GMO was introduced into the farming industry as stated by Livinghistoryfarm.org. After countless studies by Webmd.com, pesticides have been linked to cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, ADHD, and even birth defects.
