Genetically Modified Organisms Genetically modified organisms, more commonly known as GMOs is the process where genes from the DNA of one organism are taken and unnaturally forced into a completely different organism, whether a plant or even an animal. The genes being relocated into another organism possibly derive from animals, viruses, bacteria, insects, and humans. This process is done in a laboratory mostly in regards to foods and agriculture. Historically GMOs have always existed in some way in agriculture for about 10,000 years, but the process was not anywhere near the same as it is now, back then farmers would select the most productive seeds and plants from their crops. However,

This slander and defamation lead to court cases and was argued that the results were invalid due to the strain of rat that was used, Sprague-Dawley (SD), which is a strain of rat that is naturally susceptible to developing tumors. Usage of the SD rat is the norm when it comes to long term tests in regards to tumor development. On top of that, it was the same strain of rat that was used by Monsanto for their 90 day experiments which lead to the approval of their genetically modified products. If the long term results are believed to be invalid then as a result so should the results that lead to the approval, at the very least the experiments done by Monsanto was definitely insufficient in information to get approved. One of the court cases was a libel case between Marc Fellous, president of the French Association for Plant Biotechnology, and Séralini. Séralini and his co-researchers had done a re-assessment of the raw data from Monsanto’s original rat feeding of genetically modified maize and had found that there was notable signs of toxicity. Fellous was trying to discredit Séralini and prove his re-assessment as invalid to the point where he forged signatures of another scientist. The court had ruled against Fellous and he was convicted for defamation and charged with the use of

Hey Karlie! I agree with your take on how the company, Monsanto, unfortunately displayed inappropriate conduct in regards to representing their products to both the public and media. However, due to the lack of integrity and misrepresentation, the company was unable to properly build a campaign in order to efficiently persuade or change the ideas of a particular individual or group. Therefore, as said above, Monsanto shouldn't use harmful chemicals that can not only ruin their chances of creating an effective PR campaign, but in fact damage the lives of the certain individuals they may have been trying to change.…

However, their history is not so much the same as their present day status; their previous business involvement was with chemicals and plastics (7). Many chemicals that Monsanto made in the past are now considered carcinogenic and most definitely illegal today. Just a few of the chemicals they are credited with creating are the now-banned dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), the now-banned polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB’s), the controversial recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) and Aspartame, and the infamous chemical Agent Orange used in Vietnam. Monsanto was also tapped into by the United States Government to help in the development of the atomic bomb (7-8). With this controversial use technology they had then brought their biotech knowledge into the field of agriculture in the 1980’s, and have now become one of the leading companies of agricultural biotechnology in the world…

Monsanto is a leader in biotechnology and also the company that created GMO’s. They have created crops that can withstand herbicides. An ethical concern that arises are the chemicals that are in the herbicide or how a crop that has been modified be safe for humans. Plants are made for eating so when these crops have been modified to withstand herbicides, it raises questions whether it is safe for consumption or what effects it may have on the human body. Although Monsanto is legally able to modify these plants, does not necessarily mean it is right to do so.…

Most developed countries do not consider GMOs to be safe. At least 26 countries have banned GMOs including: Switzerland, Australia, Austria, China, India, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Mexico and Russia. So, where is the United States in all of this? There is much controversy and debate about GMOs and genetic modification in the U.S., but the United States government has not passed any legislation to ban the use of genetic modification, and in some cases, the company doesn’t even have to label that there are genetically modified organisms in their food. Since the United States does not ban GMOs, what would our food supply look like without any genetic modifications?…

Despite other opinions, GMOs should be used in the production of food production. GMOs would improve the lives of people all over the world, there is no goetting around it. For example, GMOs could solve world hunger and introduce stable nutrition by producing more tolerant crops. This is already taking place in Uganda, where farmers using the genetically modified crop “bazooka” are seeing better results than those who use regular corn. The article “Drought Tolerant Corn Offers Uganda’s Farmers s Lifeline”…

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in most ways beneficial to agriculture. GM crops could stimulate growth and nutrition in developing countries, and there are also no completely proven risks to safety. With more research and labeling of GMOs, the country could become more accepting of this new development in agriculture. This would be a benefit for everyone. GM crops are both easier to grow and more efficient.…

Genetically modified organisms also known as GMOs have been an area of hot debate over the last few years. In this article we will explore the arguments for and against GMOs and at the end dispel the fear-mongering and show that humanity has been modified organisms since the beginning of recorded human history; we are just much better and faster at it now than in the past 1,000s years. The goal in GMOs is to modify organisms (generally food stock such as livestock and extensive agriculture, plants), at the genetic level, to obtain better quality offspring. Companies such as Monsanto and other agriculture, industrial giants aim to create plants that taste better, have better nutrition qualities, are resistant to drought, pest, and other environmental…

This results in transgenic organisms also called genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which are defined as: “organisms that are genetically altered by humans” according to “Biology for a Changing World with Physiology” written by Shuster, Sinha, Tontonoz, and Vigna. More often than not, scientists modify the genes of organisms in order to enhance or reduce the quality of a gene, so that organism to thrive in the environment it habitats. This can be seen in animals, agricultural crops, and even during medical use. A great example of this is used by Shaster, Transgenic crops such as corn and soybeans, usually contain genes for natural pesticides which help the plants fight pests and reduce the amount of pesticide a farmer must use. Other varieties contain pesticide genes, which allow farmers to spray pesticides in fields to kill weeds but in return don 't kill the crops being produced.…

GM technology is a relatively new development; so new, that humans have not been able to observe the long-term effects of exposure to genetically modified foods. However, scientists have observed the effects of a certain strain of GM corn on rats. In the article “Genetically Modified Food to Fight Hunger?” Professor Judith Hartl reports that a study took place in which rats were fed a strain of GM corn called MON 863. After ingesting MON 863, Greenpeace,…

Farmers in developing countries have also been approached with donations and assistance in crop production with the use of the genetically altered seed. Advocacy groups constantly press Monsanto’s reputation with criticism of the product and the effects on health and the environment. The CEO redirected this criticism to decrease concern by placing the genetic seed from the consumer’s dinner plate to the animals that consumed the feed that was grown using the genetically altered seed. Constant strategy surrounds the question of safety to our health and to the environment and one that Monsanto must continually address. Currently, the FDA has claimed that genetically modified food is safe for consumption.…
