Nelson Mandela once said that “Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression” gender equality is a major issue that occurs in today’s society and is an issue that needs to be dealt with other wise women will constantly feel second best and underneath the male dominance that society has created. Gender inequality is common to occur in three major areas; In developing third world countries, workplace discrimination and in sexism and discrimination against women in sport.
Gender inequality is seen in third world countries where women are told that they will never amount to men and that they are less superior in every way shape and form. Though women now comprise to more than 40 percent of the world’s labor force, they still lag behind men in terms of earnings and productivity (Bonasso). Women in third world countries is said that over 700 million women alive today were married when they were under 18, and of those some 250 million were married before they were 15 and that women in developing countries work more than men, with less time for education, leisure, political participation and self-care. Despite some improvements over the last 50 years, in virtually every country, men spend more time on leisure each day while women spend more time doing unpaid housework (unwomen).
