Anyone who is living in the 21st century has heard of the movements of gender equality and feminism. This topic of interest has been around for awhile, and is making a huge comeback. When thinking about gender discrimination, our minds naturally assume that women are the ones being discriminated against. That assumption is wrong, men and women are equally stereotyped into roles of masculinity vs. femininity. In order to fight for gender equality, we have to understand what gender equality is, and why feminism isn 't just for women. In a UN speech delivered by Emma Watson, she stated that, "It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals." Watson points out that gender is broader than just the stereotypes that are claimed for men and women. What is gender equality anyways? Well, if you search on google, the definition will describe it as, “The state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender.” Men and women face different expectations about how they should dress, behave or work. The gender equality movement will defeat the ideology of those expectations. Gender equality requires equal satisfaction by women and men of socially-valued goods, opportunities, resources and rewards. Gender equality does not mean that men and women become the same, it means that access to opportunities and life changes doesn 't depend on, or are bounded by their sex.
