Women are typically viewed as the weaker sex while men are seen as muscular and powerful. And even though a woman’s physique doesn’t make them any less capable than men, people are still continuing to make connection between strength and competency. Because of this material difference men are put on a pedestal--the strong heroes, the brave princes in folklore, the soldiers of war; they are ultimately the champions of society. However, there are different types of strength, such as emotional. Controversial to the common belief, a woman’s emotional strength is said to be greater than that of a man’s. There are experts who claim that a woman can better “deal with change and uncertainty” which allows them to cope with “emotional consequences”(Nolen-Hoeksema “What Women Do”) in life and emerge stronger out of situations such as depression and loss. People think that because men are so stoic and hide their feelings that males are all tough but that is only because the culture of America embeds this certain view of strength into all of its inhabitants. Maybe being stoic and muscular is not all that great, but because society perceives it to be, it is. So, feminists must bring to light the fact that women are strong because although women are seen as physically weaker, they are definitely not mentally weaker. Feminists must change how society views
