The Joys of a Walking GPS

A walking GPS is a great device to be able to get you from Point A to Point B no matter where you are traveling by foot. You can then program in your travels and determine if you actually want to walk the route or if it would be better for you to take a car or a bus. Some of the more sophisticated units will also tell you how to get somewhere by car, too. Each walking GPS is a little different so you will need to determine which one fits your needs the best.

In the book, Walkable City by Jeff Speck, he explains the ten steps to walkability. He uses examples, statistics, and personal experiences to fully expand on the significance of a walkable city. Overall, I believe that the book was hard to get interested in, and although he made it for a broader audience, I felt like it didn’t pertain to me as much as it would to city planners. After seeing his lecture, I believe that he is a better speaker than a writer because he summarized the book in a way that can interest the audience.…

“In this ideology, walking functions as an emblem of the simple man and as, when the walk is solitary and rural, a means of being in nature and outside of society”(Solnit, Pg. 18) Walking is always overlooked, and is only looked at as one way of many to get from point A to point B. I feel Solnit had a great point when she illustrates how important walking is in the world. Walking is a great way to connect to your environment. When you walk you are always connected with your environment. You are looking at different things, walking on different surfaces, touching different objects, and are breathing and smelling various substances.
