Oh No, GMO’s

People have been farming and growing plants and grains for thousands of years while Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’S) have been hitting the market place for decades. These are items such as produce, grain products and even the meat products we eat on a daily basis. A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Termed the father of science he was thought to have created taxonomy a form of classification of organisms. Aristotle said in A Treatise on the Principle of life “it is amongst plants that we find the longest lived organisms, and these attain a higher age than animals, in the first place because they are less watery and therefore not easily congealed”. With this in mind I believe Aristotle would side with the Non GMO side of the argument with the premise that plants will eventually modify themselves through the evolution of life. The larger stronger plants will live longer fuller lives due to the survival of the fittest mentality. Also known as the father of logic Aristotle would more than likely be in the fight against GMO’s as he was also a traditionalist especially for the love of living …show more content…
One of the problems the companies creating these goods don’t want us to know what we are eating. It would be a virtuous idea for a company to willingly label such products. If a company wants to increase production or create new plants by changing DNA it is ok as long as we have the ability to know what is in our shopping cart. The Non-GMO Project, a company created by two west coast grocery stores, has fashioned a new standard in the industry allowing for full disclosure of such items. It is apparent that the Non-GMO Project operates with beneficent principles with the consumer in mind. This organization has been the leaders in the industry for testing and verification of Non-GMO products stamping with their seal of approval for the sale of these products. As stated on Non-GMO Projects website, “While you may see other claims regarding GMO status (e.g. “GMO free”), these are really not legally or scientifically defensible, and they are not verified by a third party. The Non-GMO Project is the only organization offering independent verification of testing and GMO controls for products in the U.S. and Canada”(Non-GMO, 5) As labeling GMO’s is not a federal law, some states are working towards making it a Right to Know Law. If every state did this a lot of people would be happy. I truly believe this is a great solution to a problem that people are ill informed
