Over the past decade, the United States of America has seen an increase in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and herbicidal crops. With the rise of GMOs in the United States, a chasm has been created between scientific evidence and the public 's perception of GMOs. On one side, scientifical research has not concluded that GMOs are a health risk but also there is no proof that GMOs are completely safe for consumer consumption. Anti-GMO activists are also on the rise, protesting that GMOs are unnatural, harmful and should require mandatory GMO labeling laws. Landrigan, she also states in her research that more studies need to be conducted on GMOs. However, Goldbas includes the advantages of GMOs in her research which includes benefits of GMOs in medicine and also food products. She touches on the fact that GMO bacteria helps make protein insulin which can help diabetes and can support growth hormones. Regarding food products, Goldbas talks about how plants that are genetically altered can have “greater nutritional value” and “higher protein.” She goes on to add that plants are developed to be resistant to virus damage. Goldbas also talks about mandatory GMO labeling, which groups in Vermont and Oregon support but the company Monsanto has been fighting. Vermont and Oregon have already began fighting for GMO labeling and Vermont became the first state which made GMO products labeled. Monsanto is a herbicide manufacturer that is fighting the mandatory labeling laws. Monsanto and 300 other companies, which are “mostly pesticide and junk food manufacturers” have threatened to sue any state that tries to pass laws to mandatory label GMOs. Adding to Dr. Landrigan’s research, Goldbas also adds how 90%+ of America 's soybeans are now genetically processed.
