Most developed countries do not consider GMOs to be safe. At least 26 countries have banned GMOs including: Switzerland, Australia, Austria, China, India, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Mexico and Russia. So, where is the United States in all of this? There is much controversy and debate about GMOs and genetic modification in the U.S., but the United States government has not passed any legislation to ban the use of genetic modification, and in some cases, the company doesn’t even have to label that there are genetically modified organisms in their food. Since the United States does not ban GMOs, what would our food supply look like without any genetic modifications? A good way evaluate this is to look at some of the problems happening in our food supply today. GMOs are present in the majority of processed foods consumed in the United States. This means that there isn’t that much of an option for people to have foods that don’t have GMOs. Genetic Modifications have created pesticide-resistant insects and superweeds. Fish and wildlife are being born with defects and are dying early because of genetic modifications. Monarch butterflies and bees are dying at unprecedented rates. Worst of all, Natural crops are being infected through cross-pollination causing them to have an auto-immune dysfunction that makes them die before harvest. Next, to see what the plants would physically look like before they are genetically modified, we can look at a Business Insider article that displays our favorite foods before years of genetic modification. In the 17th-century, Giovanni Stanchi painted a watermelon that looks as if it has six triangular pie shaped pieces instead of full red flesh that modern watermelons
