An individual is guided in life by their organismic self-regulation or one’s move towards becoming whole this is accomplished by knowing ones senses and being in the here and now. Humans are born with an innate need to grow and develop (holistic). Humans have the ability to deal with their own problems, if they are fully aware of themselves and others.
Biological/social influence: Gestalt therapist do not believe life is biologically determined however, an individual’s end goals in life are biologically determined. Social influence is important in Gestalt therapy. People cannot be understood outside of their environment. Human’s awareness, sense of self, and behavior is developed in childhood. This awareness continues to drive people through life.
3. Definition of psychopathology: Psychopathology arises when an individual fails to develop by learning from their mistake and growing. An individual may use a creative adjustment to help regulate difficult events, when these become maladaptive psychopathology may occur. It can also occur when individual have a difficult time interacting with others (disturbances in contact boundaries), or if they need personal or spiritual guidance. Empirical Evidence: It is difficult to measure the effectiveness of existential therapy using experimental design studies. Research indicates that use of Gestalt Therapy may be just as effective as Cognitive Behavior Therapy in reducing symptoms. Leung, Leung & Ng (2013) examined the effects of Gestalt workshops for social workers, counselors, and psychologist. Pre and post assessments of depression and anxiety were given to the participants. Results indicated a statically significant decrease in anxiety and depression and a statically significant increase of agency, and hope.
10. Strengths and limitations: Gestalt therapy focuses on bringing a client into awareness, this can be applied to all individuals regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Gestalt therapist work with clients of all backgrounds and cultures. A therapist attempts to understand a client’s view of the world, this includes where they see themselves within their culture. Gestalt therapy may be difficult to access by individuals of a lower social economic
