Freedom of Speech and Digital Media Consumption You’re a military member in the United States Air Force, or for this example, any branch of the United States Military. You’re scrolling through your Facebook and you provide a controversial posting about the upcoming elections and whom you will be voting for. On Monday Morning, you come in, tired and exhausted from the weekend and unknowingly get called into your commanders office. You have no idea what the meeting is in regards to until your informed that you are being reprimanded and directed to delete your post. Is this not restricting your freedom of speech or your view being a bad representation of the military? Does this occur in other companies? In this paper I will explain how employers like the military restrict Freedom of Speech, but also, how digital media platforms have also restricted Freedom of Speech and how this affects people in legal contexts as they use digital media more and more. I will start by explaining the first amendment of the United States Constitution. The first Amendment, titled Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press Assembly, and Petition passed by Congress on September 25, 1789 and ratified on December 15, 1791 states Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of…
