Frankenstein as a gothic novel Gothic literature was a literary movement from the late 18th to late 19th centuries that was a part of the Romantic movement that took place in Europe. It combined many literary themes such as nature, psychology, emotions, and the supernatural. The subject matter of gothic literature is usually very dark with tones of darkness or horror. Ruin, terror, sadness, horror, the occult, and the supernatural are all found in many of the most famous books of the gothic genre. Some of the most famous gothic authors include Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Perhaps the most famous of all gothic novels is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The story was inspired by a competition between her and her fellow authors after reading a collection of German Ghost stories. The competition was to see who could write the best scary story. Frankenstein was the result. Shelley first published the story in 1818 anonymously. The second edition later published in 1823 had her name on it. He creates a living, breathing, sentient man through an experiment. Throughout the book is only referred to as the creature. The creature terrifies Frankenstein which causes the creature to flee. Frankenstein then goes searching for the creature. He finds the creature living out in the wilderness and he has learned how to talk by eths dropping on a farmer’s family. The creature then asks him to make him a partner, a female version of the creature. Victor has to travel away to do research in order to know how to accomplish
